The Orbit

Every life has an orbit.

Most of us are shaped by the people closest to us. Family. Friends. Mentors. Colleagues.

Occasionally we encounter someone whose influence is so powerful that it changes the trajectory of our lives.

Sometimes for the better.

Sometimes not.

Looking back, I now realize one of those moments began at the top of a set of stairs leading into Peter Nygård's private Boeing 727.

At the time, I believed I was boarding an airplane.

I was actually entering an orbit.

The aircraft sat alone on the tarmac at Winnipeg's private terminal, its white fuselage gleaming beneath the floodlights. Painted across the side were the words Peter liked to use.

It wasn't simply an airplane.

It was an extension of the man who owned it.

Bold.

Extravagant.

Impossible to ignore.

I paused before stepping inside.

The cabin looked nothing like the commercial aircraft I had flown on countless times before.

Passenger seats had been replaced with leather couches, conference tables and private lounges.

Toward the rear was a bedroom.

It felt less like an airplane than a flying executive suite.

Peter loved talking about the aircraft.

He proudly pointed out that N-Force One carried the largest engines available for the Boeing 727.

Details like that mattered to him. Bigger. Faster. Better.

He even paid extra to park at New York's JFK Airport where his aircraft might be seen beside Donald Trump's own Boeing 727.

Success, in Peter's world, wasn't simply something to achieve.

It was something to display.

The airplane carried another story Peter enjoyed telling.

The Boeing 727 was equipped with a rear staircase that could be lowered in flight. Decades earlier, that same design had made aviation history when a man known as D.B. Cooper hijacked a Northwest Orient flight, parachuted into the darkness somewhere over Washington State, and disappeared without ever being found.

Everything about the airplane seemed larger than life.

Standing inside the cabin that day, I remember thinking how extraordinary my own journey had become.

Only a few years earlier I had been producing television and media projects in Winnipeg, building a career in communications like countless others.

Now I was preparing to travel aboard the private aircraft of one of Canada's most successful fashion entrepreneurs.

Ahead lay Hollywood.

New York.

The Bahamas.

Fashion shows.

Celebrity events.

Television productions.

A world very few people ever experience from the inside.

At the time, it felt like the opportunity of a lifetime.

What I couldn't have known was that I was stepping into a world shaped by ambition, image, loyalty and the extraordinary force of a single personality capable of bending almost everything around him.

For the next four years I would witness that world from closer than most people ever could.

In many cases, I wouldn't simply observe it.

I'd be the one behind the camera, recording it.

At the time, I believed I had accepted an extraordinary job.

I had no idea I was stepping into a story I would one day have to tell.

Looking back now, I understand that climbing those stairs wasn't simply the beginning of a new chapter in my career.

It was the moment I entered the orbit of Peter Nygård.
